BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Just days before 10 men broke out of a New Orleans jail, officials with the sheriff’s office asked for money to fix faulty locks and cell doors deemed a key factor in the escape.
Friday's early morning escape was the largest ever at the 9-year-old lockup, where longstanding, documented problems at the troubled facility faced mounting scrutiny.
"Leadership matters, and right now, the people of New Orleans deserve better. Sheriff Hutson should resign," Freeman said in a statement.
